What Is GAINSWave®?

GAINSWave® is a branded approach to acoustic wave therapy used in the context of men’s sexual health. It is also sometimes described in consumer-facing materials as GAINSWave shockwave therapy or acoustic wave treatment.

The therapy uses mechanical acoustic energy applied to selected treatment areas. Depending on the technology and protocol being used, acoustic wave therapy has been studied for potential effects involving blood flow and tissue response.

GAINSWave® is commonly discussed in relation to erectile function. It is not an instant erectile aid, and treatment response can vary. Whether it is appropriate depends on the underlying cause of a patient’s symptoms and the specific treatment protocol being considered.

GAINSWave® and Erectile Function

An erection depends on coordinated function involving blood vessels, nerves, smooth muscle, hormones, and psychological factors. Adequate blood flow is one important component of that process.

Some men's erectile difficulties are associated with vascular factors. Acoustic wave therapy has been studied for its potential effects on tissue response and blood flow in selected patients. However, research findings and treatment protocols vary, and response is not the same for every patient.

For that reason, we consider GAINSWave® within a broader evaluation of erectile function rather than treating it as a universal solution for erectile dysfunction.

How GAINSWave® Works

GAINSWave® uses a treatment device to deliver controlled acoustic energy to selected areas. During a session, the provider positions the handheld device against the treatment area and administers acoustic pulses according to the treatment protocol.

Acoustic wave therapy has been investigated for potential effects involving blood flow, vascular function, and tissue response. The proposed mechanism and clinical results can vary according to the technology, treatment settings, treatment protocol, and condition being treated.

For erectile health, the treatment is intended to address physiological factors associated with erectile function rather than produce an immediate, mechanically induced erection. GAINSWave® therefore differs from on-demand erectile medications and other treatments designed to produce a more immediate effect.

What Does Acoustic Wave Therapy Do?

Acoustic wave therapy has been investigated for its potential effects on tissue remodeling, blood flow, and vascular function. The proposed mechanisms depend on the specific technology, treatment protocol, and condition being treated.

For erectile health, the objective is generally related to improving the physiological factors involved in erectile function rather than creating an immediate mechanical erection.

This distinction is important. GAINSWave® is not an instant erectile aid, and the treatment should not be expected to produce the same immediate effect as a medication or other on-demand therapy.

How GAINSWave® Works

GAINSWave® Is Not the Same as
Penile Injection Therapy

GAINSWave® does not use medication or biologic material injected into penile tissue. Instead, acoustic energy is delivered externally through a handheld treatment device.

Penile injection therapies use an injectable substance and have different mechanisms, indications, administration requirements, risks, and expected effects. The appropriate option depends on the cause of your symptoms and your treatment goals.

We can discuss how GAINSWave® compares with injectable and other erectile health treatments during your consultation.

Why Might Someone Consider GAINSWave®?

Men may seek information about GAINSWave® when they experience changes in erectile function and want to discuss a noninvasive treatment option.

Common concerns include:

  • Difficulty achieving an erection
  • Difficulty maintaining an erection
  • Reduced erectile firmness
  • Concerns about vascular factors affecting erectile function
  • Interest in alternatives to medication or injectable treatments
  • A desire to understand whether acoustic wave therapy is appropriate

New or worsening erectile difficulties can also be associated with broader health conditions. Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, medication effects, hormonal changes, and other factors may contribute to erectile dysfunction.

A medical evaluation can help identify factors that may need attention before or alongside treatment for the erectile symptoms themselves.

Why Might Someone Consider GAINSWave®
Who Is a Candidate for GAINSWave®

Who Is a Candidate for GAINSWave®?

GAINSWave® may be considered for some men experiencing erectile difficulties, particularly when vascular factors may be relevant to their symptoms.

Interest in acoustic wave therapy alone does not establish candidacy. Medical history, erectile symptoms, previous treatments, overall health, and treatment goals all influence whether GAINSWave® is an appropriate option.

A physician-led consultation is necessary to determine whether this treatment fits your circumstances and whether another evaluation or treatment approach should be considered first.

When May Another Treatment Be More Appropriate?

Erectile dysfunction can have many different causes. Medication effects, hormonal abnormalities, nerve-related problems, psychological factors, vascular disease, and other medical conditions may require different forms of evaluation or treatment.

GAINSWave® is therefore one potential treatment option rather than a universal solution for erectile dysfunction. If another issue appears to be contributing to your symptoms, addressing that issue may be an important part of your care.

What Does the Evaluation Consider?

During an evaluation, we may review:

  • Your erectile symptoms and when they began
  • Your ability to achieve and maintain an erection
  • Changes in erectile firmness
  • Existing medical conditions
  • Cardiovascular and metabolic health
  • Prescription and over-the-counter medications
  • Supplements
  • Previous erectile dysfunction treatments
  • Hormonal or other sexual health concerns
  • Surgical history
  • Your treatment goals and expectations

This information helps us determine whether GAINSWave® is appropriate and whether another medical issue may need evaluation or treatment.

What to Expect During Your GAINSWave® Consultation

A private consultation gives you an opportunity to discuss your erectile and sexual health concerns with a urologist and determine whether acoustic wave therapy is appropriate.

Dr. Stuart Diamond, MD, FACS, is a board-certified urologist with more than 30 years of experience. His urologic training and experience allow sexual health concerns to be considered alongside other genitourinary and medical factors that may affect erectile function.

During your consultation, we can discuss:

  • Your primary concerns and symptoms
  • Your medical and medication history
  • Previous erectile dysfunction treatments
  • Potential contributors to your symptoms
  • Whether GAINSWave® is appropriate
  • Other treatment options that may be available
  • Treatment limitations and potential risks
  • What you can realistically expect from therapy

The goal is to establish an appropriate treatment plan before sessions begin.

What to Expect During GAINSWave® Treatment

GAINSWave® treatment is performed using a handheld acoustic wave device applied to predetermined treatment areas. The provider delivers controlled acoustic pulses according to the selected treatment protocol.

You may feel tapping, pressure, or mild sensations as the device is applied. Individual experiences vary based on treatment settings and personal sensitivity.

Because GAINSWave® does not involve a surgical incision or medication injected into penile tissue, it does not require the type of procedure associated with surgery or penile injection therapy.

How Many GAINSWave® Sessions Are Needed?

GAINSWave® is generally provided as a series of treatment sessions rather than as a single-session procedure. The appropriate number and frequency of sessions depend on the treatment protocol, your symptoms, treatment goals, and how you respond to therapy.

At Center for Advanced Urology, we discuss the recommended treatment schedule during your consultation. Completing a particular number of sessions does not guarantee a specific result.

Preparing for GAINSWave® Treatment

GAINSWave® does not involve surgery or an injection, so preparation is generally different from preparation for an invasive procedure.

Before treatment, tell us about:

  • Prescription medications
  • Over-the-counter medications
  • Supplements
  • Cardiovascular conditions
  • Diabetes or other metabolic conditions
  • Blood-thinning medications
  • Previous penile or pelvic procedures
  • Current erectile or sexual health treatments

We will provide any additional instructions that apply to your treatment plan.

If you have new or unexplained erectile changes, discuss them with your physician rather than assuming that acoustic wave therapy is the appropriate first step.

Recovery and Aftercare

GAINSWave® does not involve an incision, so it generally does not require the surgical recovery associated with an invasive procedure.

Some patients may experience temporary sensitivity, mild discomfort, redness, bruising, or other localized effects after treatment. Many patients can return to their normal routine without a prolonged recovery period, although activity recommendations can vary according to the treatment protocol and individual circumstances.

We will provide any activity or aftercare instructions that apply to your treatment. Contact our office if you experience unusual, persistent, or worsening symptoms after a session.

Can You Return to Normal Activities?

Because treatment is noninvasive, many patients can resume their normal routine without a prolonged recovery period. However, individual recommendations may differ based on the treatment protocol and your medical circumstances.

Your provider will explain any activity-related guidance during your appointment.

Potential Risks and Limitations of GAINSWave®

GAINSWave® is a medical treatment and is not appropriate for every patient. Treatment-related effects may include temporary discomfort, sensitivity, redness, bruising, or irritation in the treated area.

Another consideration is variability in treatment response. Research involving acoustic wave therapy for erectile dysfunction has produced different findings depending on the technology used, treatment protocol, patient population, and study design.

For that reason, GAINSWave® should not be presented as a guaranteed cure for erectile dysfunction. Your physician can discuss the potential benefits, limitations, and uncertainties associated with the specific treatment approach being considered for you.

What GAINSWave® Cannot Guarantee

GAINSWave® should not be presented as guaranteeing:

  • A cure for erectile dysfunction
  • Permanent improvement in erectile function
  • A specific level of erectile performance
  • Increased penile length
  • Increased penile girth
  • Increased testosterone levels
  • Improved fertility

Treatment response varies, and the purpose of the medical evaluation is to determine whether the potential benefits of GAINSWave® are appropriate for your symptoms and treatment goals.

When Should You Expect Results?

GAINSWave® is not designed to function as an immediate erectile aid. If a patient responds to treatment, changes may develop over time rather than immediately following a session.

The timing and degree of response vary. Factors that may influence outcomes include the underlying cause of erectile dysfunction, vascular health, medical conditions, lifestyle factors, treatment protocol, and individual response to therapy.

We can discuss realistic treatment goals and what would constitute a reasonable response based on your evaluation.

Follow-Up Care After GAINSWave®

Follow-up gives your physician an opportunity to assess your response to treatment and determine whether the current plan should continue or be reconsidered.

You may discuss changes in erectile function, symptoms, treatment experience, side effects, and progress toward your treatment goals.

If your symptoms do not improve as expected, that information can help determine whether another cause should be investigated or whether a different treatment approach may be more appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions About GAINSWave®

What is GAINSWave® therapy?

GAINSWave® is a branded approach to acoustic wave therapy used in the context of men's sexual health. It uses controlled acoustic energy applied to targeted areas and is commonly discussed as a noninvasive approach for selected erectile function concerns.

How Much Does GAINSWave® Treatment Cost?

For men, the current GAINSWave® pricing is:

  • GAINSWave® six-session program: $3,000
  • GAINSWave® six-session program with one P-Shot®: $4,500
  • Additional P-Shot® treatments within the GAINSWave® program: $1,500 each

These prices reflect the current treatment options provided by Center for Advanced Urology and are subject to change. Your physician can explain which treatment plan is appropriate for your circumstances and what is included in the selected program.

The P-Shot® has a separate standalone price of $1,700 when it is not part of the GAINSWave® treatment program.

Is GAINSWave® the same as shockwave therapy?

The terms acoustic wave therapy and shockwave therapy are sometimes used interchangeably in consumer-facing discussions, but the technology and treatment parameters can differ. Ask your provider which device and treatment protocol are being used and what evidence supports that specific approach.

Does GAINSWave® treat erectile dysfunction?

GAINSWave® may be considered for selected men with erectile difficulties, particularly when vascular factors may contribute. However, erectile dysfunction has many possible causes, and treatment is not guaranteed to work for every patient.

Is GAINSWave® painful?

Patients may feel tapping, pressure, or mild discomfort during acoustic wave treatment. Individual sensitivity varies. Your provider can explain what you may experience during treatment.

How many GAINSWave® treatments will I need?

GAINSWave® is generally administered as a series of treatments. The appropriate number and schedule depend on the treatment protocol and individual circumstances. Your provider will discuss a recommended plan during your consultation.

Is there downtime after GAINSWave®?

Because GAINSWave® is noninvasive, it generally does not involve the surgical recovery associated with an incision-based procedure. Your provider will give you individualized aftercare instructions.

How quickly does GAINSWave® work?

GAINSWave® is not an on-demand treatment that is expected to produce an immediate erection. If a patient responds, changes may develop over time. The timing and degree of improvement vary.

Does GAINSWave® increase penis size?

GAINSWave® should not be presented as a guaranteed penile enlargement treatment. Its primary focus is on sexual health and erectile function rather than permanently increasing penile length or girth.

Can GAINSWave® replace erectile dysfunction medication?

Not necessarily. Whether medication, acoustic wave therapy, another treatment, or a combination of approaches is appropriate depends on the cause of your symptoms and your overall health.

Is GAINSWave® appropriate for every man with erectile dysfunction?

No. Erectile dysfunction can result from many different conditions. A medical evaluation is important to determine whether GAINSWave® is appropriate and whether another underlying issue needs attention.

What should I expect from a GAINSWave® consultation?

Your consultation will focus on your symptoms, medical history, medications, treatment goals, and potential causes of erectile difficulties. Your physician can then discuss whether acoustic wave therapy is appropriate and what alternatives may be available.
