FDA Corrects the Record on Hormone Therapy

Philadelphia, PA — July 17, 2025 — In a long-overdue move, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration is correcting decades of public misunderstanding surrounding hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Today’s expert panel addresses one of the most consequential misinterpretations in women’s health history: the 2002 Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study. Contrary to the widespread fear it sparked, the WHI did not find a statistically significant increase in breast cancer mortality related to HRT. But misinformation spread rapidly. HRT prescriptions plummeted—and millions of women were left to suffer untreated symptoms and long-term health consequences.
