Find Information About Your Urologic Health

Our educational resources are organized around several areas of urologic care. Depending on your concern, you may find information in the Urology Information Base, Urological Conditions,
Intimate Wellness resources, or our educational articles.

If you are not sure which category applies to your symptoms, starting with general information can help you identify questions to bring to your urologist.

  • Penile Enhancement and
    Intimate Health

Penile enhancement involves different procedures and treatment approaches, and the appropriate option depends on the patient's goals, anatomy, medical history, and the specific concern being addressed.

Patient education resources can help you understand the differences between available procedures, what a treatment involves, potential risks, and questions to consider before scheduling a consultation.

The Center for Advanced Urology also provides information about treatments and procedures associated with intimate wellness and men's sexual health.

  • Sexual Health

Sexual health concerns can involve erectile function, sexual wellness, hormonal factors, vascular health, medications, and other urologic or medical conditions.
Educational information can help you understand common concerns and recognize when persistent changes in sexual function may warrant an evaluation.

Our sexual health resources include information related to services such as:

    • P-Shot®
    • O-Shot®
    • GAINSWave®
    • Penile enhancement
    • Other intimate wellness services

These treatments address different concerns and should not be treated as interchangeable. For detailed information about a specific procedure, review the corresponding treatment page and discuss your individual circumstances with a qualified provider.

  • Prostate Enlargement and BPH

Benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH or an enlarged prostate, can cause lower urinary tract symptoms as the prostate enlarges and affects the passage of urine.

    Common symptoms include:

    • Weak or interrupted urine stream
    • Difficulty starting urination
    • Frequent urination
    • Urinary urgency
    • Increased nighttime urination
    • A sensation that the bladder has not completely emptied

Our educational resources can help patients understand BPH, the evaluation process, and available treatment approaches.

The Center for Advanced Urology provides information about options including UroLift®, Rezūm™, SOLTIVE™ Laser Therapy, PlasmaButton™, and iTind™, as well as diagnostic evaluation for men experiencing urinary symptoms.

  • Urinary Incontinence and Bladder Control

Urinary leakage, urgency, frequency, and difficulty controlling the bladder can have different causes. Identifying the type and pattern of symptoms is an important part of determining what evaluation or treatment may be appropriate.

Educational resources can help patients learn about bladder-control problems and potential approaches, including behavioral strategies, medication, diagnostic testing, and neuromodulation.

The Center for Advanced Urology provides information about urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, InterStim™ therapy, and Urgent® PC.

  • Hormone Health

Hormonal changes can affect different aspects of health, and symptoms associated with hormone levels vary from person to person.

Our hormone health resources provide information about hormone-related concerns and the importance of appropriate evaluation before beginning treatment. The website includes dedicated information about Hormone Optimization for Men and Women and Equilux™, along with broader educational material related to hormone health.

Hormone treatment is not appropriate for everyone. Medical history, symptoms, laboratory findings, medications, age, reproductive considerations, and other factors may affect whether treatment should be considered.

  • Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer evaluation can involve several stages. Depending on an individual's age, risk factors, symptoms, PSA results, examination findings, and other considerations, a physician may recommend screening, additional testing, imaging, biopsy, or continued monitoring.

Patient education can help explain these terms and provide background before a discussion with your urologist.

The Center for Advanced Urology also provides information about Promaxo MRI and Promaxo MRI-Guided Biopsy for patients researching advanced approaches to prostate evaluation.

General Urology Information

Urology encompasses conditions involving the urinary tract and, in men, the male reproductive system. Patients may seek information about urinary symptoms, prostate conditions, testicular concerns, reproductive health, sexual function, medications,
procedures, or other urologic issues.

The Urology Information Base and Urological Conditions sections provide broader educational material for patients who are researching a symptom or diagnosis and may not yet know which treatment or specialty resource applies to them.

These resources can be particularly useful when you are preparing for a first appointment or trying to understand
terminology used during an evaluation.

Featured Patient Health Topics

In addition to condition-specific resources, the Center for Advanced Urology publishes educational articles addressing individual questions that may arise before, during, or after a urologic evaluation.

Current topics include:

  • Indwelling catheter care
  • Testicular self-examination
  • Changes in urine color
  • Oral testosterone
  • Foamy urine
  • Vasectomy reversal
  • Erectile dysfunction medications
  • Coping with erectile dysfunction
  • Fertility preservation for cancer patients

These articles address specific patient questions and can provide useful background information. They should be considered alongside, rather than in place of, advice from your physician.

Using Patient Education Before Your Appointment

Educational resources can help you prepare for a medical appointment by giving you a better understanding of the terminology and issues you may want to discuss.

Consider writing down:

  • When your symptoms began
  • Whether they are getting better, worse, or staying the same
  • How often they occur
  • Medications and supplements you currently take
  • Previous procedures or treatments
  • Questions about testing or treatment
  • Changes in your symptoms or daily activities

Bringing this information to an appointment can help your physician understand the problem and determine whether additional evaluation is needed.

A Symptom Does Not Always Identify the Diagnosis

Urologic symptoms can have more than one possible cause. Urinary frequency, for example, may be associated with BPH, bladder conditions, infection, medications, fluid intake, or other factors. Changes in sexual function can also involve vascular, hormonal, neurologic, medication-related, psychological, or other causes.

Patient education can help you understand possibilities, but it cannot determine which explanation applies to you.

If symptoms are persistent, worsening, or concerning, an evaluation by a qualified healthcare professional is appropriate. Your physician can consider your symptoms, medical history, examination findings, and appropriate testing when determining the cause and next step.

Patient Education FAQs

What can I learn from the Center for Advanced Urology's patient education resources?

The educational resources cover conditions, symptoms, diagnostic approaches, procedures, and treatment options across areas of urology, including BPH, urinary conditions, sexual health, prostate cancer, hormone health, penile enhancement, and general urology.

Can patient education diagnose my symptoms?

No. Educational material can explain common causes and treatment approaches, but it cannot determine the cause of your individual symptoms. A medical evaluation may be necessary to establish a diagnosis.

Where should I start if I do not know what is causing my symptoms?

The Urology Information Base and Urological Conditions resources provide broader information that may help you understand common urologic concerns. If your symptoms persist or interfere with daily life, discussing them with a qualified healthcare professional is appropriate.

Does the website provide information about BPH treatment?

Yes. The Center for Advanced Urology provides educational information about BPH and several treatment options, including UroLift®, Rezūm™, SOLTIVE™ Laser Therapy, PlasmaButton™, and iTind™.

Does the website provide information about sexual health?

Yes. Patient education resources include information about erectile function, sexual wellness, penile enhancement, and related treatments and services.

Can I use these resources instead of seeing a urologist?

No. Patient education is intended to provide general information and help you prepare for conversations with your healthcare provider. It cannot replace an individualized medical evaluation.
